JURY AWARDS $80,000.00 TO NURSE AGAINST HOSPITAL

June 14, 2013

A Chickasaw County jury recently awarded Carol Crausby, a former emergency room supervisory nurse, a verdict of $80,000.00 against her former employer, Southern Health Corporation of Houston, Inc. d/b/a Trace Regional Hospital, in Houston, Mississippi. The jury found the hospital vicariously liable for conspiracy by two of its administrators with a local doctor, who pressured the hospital to fire Crausby.

The jury held Dr. Victor Horn liable for slander per se, but awarded no damages against him. The jury also exonerated the two hospital administrators, Charles Nasem, former hospital Executive Administrator, and Carol Colbert, Director of Human Resources, now retired.

The verdict is now challenged by defendants Horn and hospital. The Circuit Court has not yet entered judgment on the verdict or ruled on the defendants' motion to dismiss. Plaintiff, by her attorney, Ron Lewis, has requested a hearing in the ongoing litigation.
